Sex case policeman John Edward Bates was officially dismissed from the Lincolnshire Police Force on Friday during a disciplinary hearing.

Chief constable Mr James Kerr heard the evidence against Bates, branded a “menace to boy scouts” by a judge after being found guilty of 13 sex offences against young boys.

Sex case policeman John Edward Bates has been found guilty of indecently assaulting eleven young boys.

The jury at Nottingham Crown Court took more than ten hours to reach its verdict on the 15 charges facing the former Spalding scoutmaster.

Spalding police constable John Bates – charged with indecently assaulting young boys – has been described by a police inspector as “a first-class leader and scout organiser”.

Insp Keith Woods, also an administrator of scouts, told Nottingham Crown Court that 35-year-old Bates had devoted a great deal of his spare time to scouting.

A policeman loaned hard-core sex magazines to fellow constable John Bates – who in turn showed them to teenage boys, a court has been told.

The pornographic magazines were stored at Holbeach police station in PC Alan Williams Bradley’s locker, Nottingham Crown Court heard on Friday.

The magazines and three “blue” films were shown to excite the boys while they visited Bates, a scoutmaster, at his flat in Spalding, said Mr Desmond Fennell, QC, prosecuting.

John Bates Convicted at Nottingham Crown Court – July 1983

John Edward Bates (65), born 1948, formerly of Spalding, Lincolnshire, was convicted on multiple counts of indecent assault and numerous sexual offences with minors at Nottingham Crown Court in July 1983.

Mr Bates was given a 4 year sentence – served at Her Majesty’s Prison Frankland, Brasside in County Durham. Unfortunately he only served 3 years.
